About this property

Welcome to The Hemingway

The Hemingway is a 4.5-star hotel located on 929 Washington Ave in Ocean Springs, MS, offering a convenient base for visitors interested in sightseeing, recreation, and exploring the local area. Guests arrive from nearby airports such as Gulfport-Biloxi International Airport (about a 28-minute drive) and Mobile Regional Airport (just over an hour by car). The hotel’s position places it close to cultural attractions including the Walter Anderson Museum of Art and the Ohr-O'Keefe Museum of Art, both well-regarded for their unique exhibits and regional significance.

Accommodations at The Hemingway reflect a boutique style with well-maintained, clean rooms praised by many guests, although some have mentioned limited onsite staff presence and minor operational issues such as parking difficulties during busy events. The property operates a self-check-in system with check-in from 3 PM and check-out at 11 AM. The setting accommodates visitors looking for an authentic experience in downtown Ocean Springs, with nearby dining and shopping easily accessible on foot.

While the proximity to a train crossing results in intermittent noise, this aspect has divided opinions; some guests found it nostalgic and not disruptive, while others viewed it as a drawback. The hotel does not offer a traditional front desk, and communication has been noted as inconsistent in guest feedback. Travelers should consider these factors alongside the convenient location and local atmosphere when choosing accommodation in this area.

The Hemingway sits in a neighborhood with several other lodging options within walking distance, including highly rated properties such as The Mockingbird Inn and The Inn of Ocean Springs. This makes it a practical choice for visitors eager to explore the charming town surroundings and cultural sites while staying in a mid-range hotel that balances comfort with locality.

We stayed at the Hemingway since the inn was already booked . We never saw anyone from the property until our last day ( we stayed 5 nights) we saw the housekeeper. She was very nice . We looked everywhere for ice to put in the ice bucket but we couldn’t find any . My understanding was that breakfast was included in the room but we didn’t know where to go for that either . The communication absolutely sucked . Then on Friday night they had a Mardi Gras parade ( which was way to cold to go to) when we got back to the Hemingway someone was parked in our reserved spot . We called to office 4 times & never heard anything back . So we ended up having to park in a no park area. Unless you know the area / hotel of what to expect there are definitely other places to stay there . We even scanned the bar code in the room & all that came up was there website info . WOULD NOT STAY HERE AGAIN . Definitely not worth the money .

The Hemingway is right on the main thoroughfare of Ocean Springs, so we could look out our windows and enjoy watching the Christmas shoppers. At night, we got a big, free Christmas light show from all the lights OS put up for the holidays. The place was fun, well-situated, and very clean. It was a very nice two-night stay!

The room was beautiful and very clean. My four star review only comes from two things: 1. I would’ve much preferred a regular coffee maker or a Keurig machine over the French press. The instructions were easy to follow, but I wasn’t impressed with the coffee it made. I was able to find some great options at a local coffee shop around the corner, though, at The French Kiss pastry shop. 2. We stayed in the Martha. After arriving at the room, I was disappointed to realize it only had one bed. I think the website was a little confusing and I was under the impression I had. Two beds. Instead, there is a futon type couch and a king bed in a back room. The trip was me, my mom, my sister-in-law, and my niece. Although three of us fit in the bed and one slept in the futon, it wasn’t ideal. I regret not calling and making sure I had a large enough room, but I would’ve liked for the website to warn me after saying it was a total of 4 people. I think clearer information would be very helpful there. Many people complained about the train. It was made very clear on the site that the building is directly across from tracks. None of us were bothered by it at all and slept like babies. They have a wind machine and earplugs available for guests, too. People have to realize that many hotels were originally built in these locations because that’s where people were getting off the train when they traveled. Personally, I thought it added to the charm. The location in relation to downtown couldn’t be much better. You walk outside and you are there admits lovely oak trees and quaint local shops. I can’t wait to return and soak up more of the local town.

First the negative: this is near a train crossing and a train comes every 3-5 hours around the clock with a loud horn. That's a deal breaker for some, but we really enjoyed our stay there and would do it again. These are part of a collection several boutique rooms scattered through the historic downtown. It's in a great location with a Farmers' Market across the street on Saturdays. Although there's no main desk here (just a code), someone always answered when we called with impeccable service. We stayed in The Hadley, which had great decor, 12 ft ceilings and giant windows overlooking the main street. There is a flight of stairs up the the rooms and no elevator which may matter to some. There is free public street parking outside the building next to a small park. I've seen some reviewers complain about homeless people spotted in the park, but that's typical for a beach town and we never felt unsafe.

We had to cut our two night trip to Ocean Springs short due to Hurricane Ida. However, we were able to enjoy a Friday night of fun entertainment in Ocean Springs followed by the great accommodations at The Hemingway. We were traveling with another couple and enjoyed the party space in The Hadley Suite. The gracious owners covered us for the second night due to the evacuation orders. We will be back but not during peak hurricane season!

Nice updated room. Very convenient location to all the shops and restaurants. Trains mentioned by others was hardly noticed overnight. They aren’t your typical 120 car unit trains. There were ear plugs provided if someone feels the need. We will definitely stay here again.

We loved the property! Will definitively make a return visit. We made our initial reservation at The Inn but ended up staying in The Hadley Suite @ The Hemingway. Beautiful suite, very well appointed. The train actually was kind of nostalgic, didn’t bother us at all. Two issues, the shower leaked onto the wood floors, we used towels to try to mitigate any damage to the floors. Secondly, the TV in the living area was difficult to connect to the internet. We had to manually connect every time we turned on the TV. We still give the property 5 Stars. Every staff member we interacted with was very friendly and extremely helpful. Thank you for a wonderful stay. Hope to see you again soon!
